Opened in December 1799. When the canal was renamed 'The Grand Union Canal' the locks were widened to 14 feet. The widening took almost six years to complete. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the widening consisted of adding a second wide lock adjacent to the original narrow lock. When you look at any of the locks, there is a narrow lock, now unused. The unused narrow lock number 43 is now used as a Dry Dock on a daily rental basis from the Canal & River Trust.

Locks 26 to 46 on the Grand Union Canal. Bottom Lock (26) is a very short walk from Warwick Parkway Train Station.

Just under two miles from lock 26 to lock 46, the arduous 21 locks became known as the stairway to heaven as they lead onto the Camp Hill Locks which, were not only easier but was also where the boatmen were paid.

Like a lot of wide lock flights, it pays to buddy up with another narrowboat and share the work load.

A total rise of 148 feet (45m).

There are mooring spots along the flight in the larger gaps and also at the top together with a cafe and the nearby Hatton Arms.

Between locks 42 and 43, there is a magnificent stainless steel sculpture of a dragonfly by Gideon Peterson.

Boater facilities at the top include: Water, Elsan, Refuse and Short Term Mooring.
