Knowle Locks are the most northern locks that are wide enough to take a wide-beam boat. From here on, going north, it's Narrow Boats only.
Originally narrow locks and rising/falling 42 feet. Additional wide locks were added during the 1930's when the Grand Union Canal was undergoing massive upgrades in an attempt to compete with the ever increasing pressure from the railways.
Today, the locks are a very impressive site and worth a visit whether you have a boat or not.
