Navigation from the Weaver Navigation to the Manchester Ship Canal is via Marsh Lock at Weston Marsh.
Each of the locks is a twin, one much larger than the other. The smaller lock is for narrow and wide-beam boats and the other for larger shipping. Only Marsh Lock, which connects to the Manchester Ship Canal is a single lock.
Connect to the Trent and Mersey Canal at the Anderton Boat Lift.
Completed in 1732 and running from Western Point, where it connected to the Manchester Ship Canal, to Winsford (about five miles south of Northwich).
Later, a new lock was added at Weston Marsh providing easier access to the Manchester Ship Canal as the gates at Weston Point are tidal gates and access could be dependant on the state of the tide.
Initially, eleven locks provided access to the full navigation and several areas that are now not accessible. There are old disused locks at Western Point Docks and Frodsham Cut.
Many sections of the original navigation have been straightened out leaving the old river course to nature.
