Hillmorton Locks
Short Term Mooring, Lock Flight, in or near to Rugby
Hillmorton Locks can be found on the Oxford Canal in Warwickshire and quite near to Rugby.
What can be found at: Hillmorton Locks
Three pairs of locks with a total rise of 18 feet and 7 inches.
Well known as the busiest flight of locks on the entire canal network. Completed, originally as three single locks, in 1774 but rebuilt as three double locks in 1840 due to the sheer numbers of narrowboats making their way through. The middle pair are Grade II Listed as they still have the cast iron gates installed to make them longer lasting. One of my images in the album on this page appears to show one of these rare iron gates, on the bank just down from the bottom lock.
James Brindley began as the engineer for the Oxford Canal but died before the installation of Hillmorton Locks. His son-in-law, Samual Simcock had assisted James Brindley on the canal and took over after his death. It was Samual Simcock who was in charge when the locks were completed in 1774.
Between each pair of locks, there is a set of winding gears. These were used to enable transfer of water from one lock to another, thereby saving this precious canal commodity.
