The River Great Ouse Connects with the following Canals and Navigable Waterways:

History and General Knowledge of the River Great Ouse

Navigable from Kempston (south west of Bedford) to The Wash via Denver Sluice Locks. Sir John Rennie designed the new river lock and sluice, incorporating a tidal lock with no less than four sets of gates, enabling it to be used at most states of the tide.

Work on the River Great Ouse to make it navigable was first recorded in 1236. Regular flooding necessitated work to make navigation less dangerous. Through the centuries, other navigation's were added including the New Bedford and Old Bedford Rivers. Right up to the 20th century work continued to make navigation more reliable and to gain better control over flooding.
