History and General Knowledge of the New Bedford River

Almost dead straight from River Great Ouse (Hermitage Lock) to Denver Sluice.

Work began in the 1620's to reduce flood waters. Francis Russell (4th Earl of Bedford) agreed to carry out the building of the New Bedford River in return for 95000 acres of land that was reclaimed as a result if the new waterway.

Completed in 1637 and although intended as a flood control is a man-made navigable waterway that pre-dates the canals.

Tidal flows are registered all the way to Welney which is 19 miles inland.
