River levels can affect the draught and headroom.
Flooding is likely after heavy rainfall. Signposts on the bridge at the lock indicate the need for flood protection precautions.
The Soar begins in Wibtoft in Warwickshire but is navigable from bridge 1 where the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Line) ends (bridge 112) and becomes the River Soar.
Winding its way north towards the River Trent, the River Soar weaves between the lakes at Birstall and Wanlip and then along the South Western edge of Barrow on Soar.
The River Soar's route is a beautiful and rural one and very popular with all kinds of boats from Canoes & Dinghies to Narrow Boats & Cruisers.
After many failed attempts, the River Soar was finally made navigable in 1778 Loughborough Navigation Company. It ran from the River Trent to Loughborough. When combined with the Erewash Canal, the River Soar was the most profitable canal on the network for a short while. As with many of our canals, it fell into decline with the arrival of the railway network.
