Kingswood Junction joins the North Stratford Canal (northern part of The Stratford-Upon-Avon Canal) to the Grand Union Canal. The junction between these two canals was a bit of a latecomer in the canal age.

It's a complicated junction with a 273 yard section 'The Kingswood Arm' that runs North West to South East of the junction meeting the Grand Union Canal, which at the time was called the Warwick and Napton Canal, at Bridge 37 and the North Stratford Canal between locks 21 and 22.

The North Stratford Canal from the Junction and going south fell into disrepair but was reopened by the Queen in 1964. The section going north to Kings Norton was one of the first canal sections to begin renovation by the, at the time, new Inland Waterways Association.

The Lapworth Link, was originally a lock connecting the Kingswood Arm to the North Stratford. Later the Lapworth Link was made into a Stop Lock that required permanent staff to look after its operation. When Lock 21 was built, the Stop Lock was filled in and the gates removed. In 1996, it was reopened as you see it today. It was closed because the Warwick and Birmingham Canal Company objected to the water loss. As with many canal junctions, there was much argy-bargy and Parliamentary acts passed to resolve the situation.

Today, the Lapworth Link where the two canals join are at the same level making the transition from canal to the other much faster. Shame it wasn't seen that way in the past.

The village shop in Lapworth is at Old Warwick Rd, Kingswood, Solihull B94 6LN. Best to moor up between Locks 18 and 19 where there is also a water point.

Other boater facilities listed above can be found at the lower end of the junction just above Lock 22,

Just before Bridge 35, there is a large 'Side Pond' that helps to feed the canal with water. In the winter, there is often a good amount of water flowing strongly over the lower spillway.
