Saul Junction is a historic canal junction located in Gloucestershire, England, where the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal meets the, now defunct, Stroudwater Navigation. It is situated in the village of Saul, which is approximately 7.5 miles by boat, southwest of the city of Gloucester.
The junction was originally built in the late 18th century to enable boats to transfer between the two canals, which were built for different purposes. The Gloucester and Sharpness Canal was designed to provide a direct route between the River Severn and the port of Gloucester, while the Stroudwater Navigation was constructed to transport goods such as coal, iron, and agricultural products from the Stroud Valleys to the River Severn.
Today, Saul Junction is a popular destination for boaters and visitors, offering picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and a glimpse into the area's industrial heritage. The junction features a number of historic buildings, including a former canal warehouse that now houses a tea room and gift shop.
Visitors can also take a walk along the towpath or enjoy a boat trip along the canal. The area is known for its abundant wildlife, including otters, kingfishers, and herons, and is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Overall, Saul Junction is a fascinating and picturesque location that provides a window into the history of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal and the important role it played in the industrial development of the region.
